Indira Gandhi declared a state of Internal Emergency in 1975. The opposition parties responded aggressively and the nation went into limbo where nobody knew what was going to happen. Many journalists and opposition leaders who were arrested for opposing the Emergency were released in 1977 when the elections were announced. For the first time, all the opposition parties joined hands under the banner of the Janata Dal and the leadership of Jayaprakash Narayan to fight the excesses of the Emergency. The victory was theirs. Morarji Desai was chosen as Prime Minister of the country, but did not last for long.

 

Sonia Gandhi – the reluctant leader, took over the reins of the party as it’s President, a post that she continues to hold.

 

The legacy of Indira Gandhi continued even when senior leader Narsimha Rao took over as the Prime Minister of the country. Leaders stood sandwiched between a larger than life image of Indira in the background.
